"THE letters began to arrive as soon as Maggie Beer announced her intention to do something about the standard of food in Australia’s aged-care homes. What began as a trickle became a steady flow of thanks, much of it from the families of elderly Australians desperately unhappy at seeing their loved ones exist on meals of tinned soup, tasteless pre-frozen vegetables and supermarket sausage rolls.
In one letter, a woman tells Beer of her horror at learning residents at an aged-care home were fed a single party pie and a quarter of a buttered slice of bread for dinner; another correspondent, so disgusted by the meals dished up to her elderly parents, is now volunteering in the kitchen and begs Beer for advice on how to make things better."
